Can you keep what you catch in Puerto Vallarta?

September 4, 2026

Yes, within the usual limits — and the crew handles all of it, so you don't need to study regulations before breakfast.

The rough etiquette of the boat:

  • —Keep: tuna, dorado, wahoo, snapper. The yellowfin here is genuinely the best eating that comes over the rail, and a dorado feeds a crowd.
  • —Release: all billfish (sailfish, marlin) and roosterfish. This isn't just custom — it's how the fishery stays a fishery.

What happens to your fish: the crew bleeds and ices it properly, and back at Marina Vallarta it can go to a restaurant that'll cook your catch — a lot of guests do exactly this the same evening. There's no better fish taco than the one you caught that morning.

Limits exist per species and the captain knows them cold. If you're dreaming of filling a cooler, say so when you book and we'll point you at the right month and the right fish.
